Playing the game

The aim of the game is to gain as many points as possible. You gain points by jumping around on the game board with your little Atomic man, catching atoms. But it is not until you can build molecules and answer chemistry-related questions that you start to collect the really high scores.

How to catch atoms:

  • You use your mouse to control your Atomic man on the game board. By clicking on an atom, he will catch it.
  • You must clear your home area of atoms before you can enter the main board.
  • On the main board you move freely. If you jump down into one of the “corner wells” you will emerge back onto the board from the well in the diagonally opposite corner – and you may continue your hunt for atoms there.

How to build molecules:

  • All the atoms you catch will be stored in the Storage bin. To build molecules you have to move them to your Factory.
  • The Molecule-cards to the right on the screen display the molecules you can choose from in the current game. The cards either contain the chemical formula of a molecule or the molecule’s name.
  • To build a molecule you need the right amount of atoms in your Factory. The bigger the molecule, the more points you gain.
  • You build a molecule by double clicking on the Molecule-card and you gain points if your Factory contains the right amount of atoms. If not, you lose your opportunity to build that particular molecule.
  • You can rotate the three-dimensional model of the molecule you have built with your mouse.

Double or Quits:

  • As soon as you have built your first molecule, you can enter the "Double or Quits" quiz session by jumping into the well in the center of the game board and answering chemistry-related multiple-choice questions.
  • Once you are in the quiz area you have to select your difficulty level; 1, 2 or 3. The more difficult the question you choose, the more points you gain. 1 is easiest, 3 hardest.
  • The questions comply with subjects covered in individual member countries’ curricula.

To be able to answer the various questions in the game, it might be a good idea to look into the subjects in the Science Corner or search for other relevant websites.

Chatting in Molecool:

Whenever you are logged in, you may chat with your opponents. On the left beneath the game board, you can see a Text box that constantly displays small trivia etc. while the game is going on. Underneath this box you will find a square you can use for writing short messages to the other players. When you press enter, your message will appear in the Text box above for all the players to read.
